TV and Radio Interviews for a Magician

TV Interviews

TV and Radio Interviews for a Magician are nerve-wracking the first few times. Being in a TV studio, in particular, is completely different from what it looks like on the screen. There are cameras, lights, cables and body mics to assimilate.

A good host can make all the difference for the first interview. They explain how long the set is going to last, a few of the questions that will be asked and show you where you’ll sit or stand. Additionally, they’ll also give you an idea where you should be looking, at them or at the camera.

In the beginning, local cable stations were the easiest way to get on TV. Because the stations were smaller, they were always looking for guests. It was a good way for me to gain experience without worrying too much about the outcome.

Big Time!

The following video was from Breakfast TV in Toronto when I was promoting a theatre show I was performing with my team at a Toronto theatre. As it was breakfast television, I was up early to make it to the studio on time. Upon arriving the host, Kevin, explained a bit about the interview. I was really happy the way it turned out.

Radio Interviews

A radio interview is very different for a magician than a TV interview. You would think it couldn’t be done because nobody listening to the interview would be able to see what the trick was that was being shown to the host. That is true, but with a bit of thought and creativity, some amazing magic can be presented and the verbal reactions of the host really creates a lot of excitement. The listening audience experiences the magic vicariously through the host.

Radio Interview While on Tour

While on tour in Newfoundland with a friend of mine, Michael Conway, who is also a magician, we did a radio interview in St. John’s. This helped sell tickets at the various theatres we performed at across the province.

The host was very cool, asked some great questions and loved the magic we performed in studio.

In the entertainment world media interviews are an essential part of the job. Everytime you see or hear someone doing an interview, they are spreading the word about their performance. The excitement they convey sells tickets to their shows so more people can see their amazing performance. I love this part of the business and am always ready to share my gift of entertainment.
